Over a 10-year period, the number of vehicles stolen soared by 42% as the average cost for vehicles stolen soared by 145%.
- The number of claims for thefts of entire vehicles (“entire-vehicle thefts”) increased significantly by 113% from 2018 to 2022 to reach 10 595.
- The average cost of claims for entire-vehicle thefts rose by 145% between 2012 and 2022 to $35,168.
- As with the number of claims, the claims frequency dropped steadily from 2012 to 2016. The claim frequency doubled in four years, from 0.11% to 0.22%.
Claims for entire-vehicle theft
The number of vehicles insured for theft rose by 17.3% over the 2012-2022 period, from 4.1 million to 4.8 million.
- The number of vehicles insured against theft increased by 17.3% for 2012-2022, rising from 4.1 million to 4.8 million vehicles.
- The number of entire-vehicle thefts plummeted by 86% between 2011 and 2016. This figure then began to increase again, reaching 10,595 in 2022. Between 2021 and 2022, there was a significant increase of 38%.
